Stepping Stones Together – Teaching Kids to Read

Trying to teach my kids to read has always been a tough and intimidating challenge. I try, but I guess my mind doesn’t work in a way that allows me to teach someone so small the daunting task of reading…especially when you get past the three letter words. My kids get frustrated. I get frustrated. Pretty soon we’re all throwing up our hands and ditching the book for playtime and a snack.

Stepping Stones Together

Stepping Stones Together is here to help parents tackle this daunting and often intimidating task of teaching kids to reach. This personalized online reading program will help kick start the learning process for kids ages around 4 to 7 years old. The program is recommended for children who can:

  1. identify the letters in the alphabet (upper & lower case)
  2. know the sounds of the letters
  3. show a genuine interest in learning to read (maybe the enjoy telling you their favorite story)
  4. know some print basics: letters make up words and spaces indicate a new word.

Stepping Stones Together has created over 30 books with three levels of reading difficulty labeled A, B & C. A is the beginner level with C being the most advanced level. Each book is a short story, about 5 pages, so it doesn’t take too long to get through, approximately 15 minutes. Every book includes a writing or drawing prompt to help reinforce comprehension of the story the child just read. They offer games, incentive charts and personalized certificates to help keep you and the kids motivated through the program.

Kids learn at different levels and paces. Stepping Stones Together offers two subscription options. A 3 month subscription for only $19.99 while a year’s subscription is available for $39.99. Both include unlimited access to the program, printable books and activities. Learn more about Stepping Stones Together at their webpage, Facebook or Twitter pages.

I’m anxious to see how well this program works for Wild Man once he’s graduated from preschool next Spring. What were some of the challenges you faced when your kids were learning to read?

BTW-You can win a free year’s subscription to Stepping Stones Together at Mama Buzz.
