I received a letter from my son's school asking for suggestions to reduce their budget without sacrificing the quality of education they provide the kids. Here's what the letter said:Dear Patron of the Lancaster Public School District:We are in a VERY small school district. Only one school, K-12, with a total of about 350 kids in the entire school. Staff reductions and consolidating schools aren't an option since there's only one building and one teacher per grade (except for Senior High). Our school remains open during extended day hours for community use. The hallways are used quite a bit as a walking track during our subzero winters-we'd like to keep this option viable.
Minnesota Public Schools will continue to be underfunded during the next biennium. To address these funding concerns, the Lancaster Public School is in the process of gathering feedback from the district shareholders on budgetary reductions. This information will be compiled and presented to the Lancaster Board of Education for consideration. We're asking you to take a few minutes and give us some feedback on how the Lancaster School can most effectively reduce costs yet still allow us to offer a first-class education for all of our students. Please be specific and cite examples wherever possible.
I would like to thank you in advance for your input and on-going support of the Lancaster School. Your input is appreciated and your voice will be heard.Supt. Homstad
I've got a few simple ideas but wasn't sure what other ideas might be floating around out there. The incredible ingenuity of all you wonderful bloggers and readers are needed. If you've got any suggestions to help our school reduce it's budget, I'd love to hear them.
Here's what I've got on my list:
- Install time switches on the power system to automatically turn off/on at specific times. This should significantly reduce the vampire electricity used by computers, forgotten lights left on, stoves, ovens, radios, tv's, etc.
- Install digital thermostats to better control heating/cooling costs.
- Upgrade to low flow toilets to reduce water consumption and save on utilities
- Sell any stored unused/older equipment or furniture. This will eliminate storage costs plus bring in a bit of income for a special project.
- Increase the length of the school day and move to a four day school week. This will reduce school bus fuel costs, lunch/breakfast expenses, electricity, maintenance, as well as many other areas. Yes, this is a more drastic measure but if finances become a serious issue in the future, it may be the better option.
Any ideas, links to articles, or testimonials will be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to privately email me with any details or links you don't want shared publicly. As always, your comments are welcomed and appreciated!

Why not charge a small fee for after school and for the people who walk a dollar or two . :-$
