Marty Roe, Dan Truman, Jimmy Olander, Brian Pout, Gene Johnson and Dana Williams take turns telling the tale of how Diamond Rio came together not only as a musical band, but as friends. Beautiful Mess is a unique book. It’s not told from one perspective rather is an inspiration with each chapter told from a different band member’s perspective. Beautiful Mess not only describes their own personal joys, trials and troubles but also chronicles the journey of the band’s transition from the local Tennessee River Boys to the nationally admired band, Diamond Rio (whom I personally fell in love with in the 90’s).
Beautiful Mess is an unlikely story about faith and friendship. Living outside of Nashville nearly my entire life, I know how cut throat the music business can be. It’s rare to find a group in the industry who’s friendships go untarnished from fame and success. This group’s devotion to each other and God has endured much. Celebrating each other’s accomplishments in good times. Avoiding the temptation of selling each other out in the bad times. This is an unusual feel good story from the music business that leaves me knowing “With God, all things are possible”.
I highly recommend this book if you want to see faith in action, curious about the band’s roots, or want to the inside scoop on how tough the music industry can be.
