One of my questions for Jean Chatzky is: How do I, a current stay-at-home mom get back on track financially, particularly after the end of this year, when I have no idea what our family's expenses are?
Another question: Is it wise to limit spending "in the black" (or for many others on credit) during Black Friday deals if you really need the item and know that the price won't get that low for a while? Say for a laptop for school or for a crockpot? Not gift items but necessities.
Hi, I'm from FunOnABudget Yahoo Group: Karebear70006@yahoo.com:
My next question is: How do I encourage my spouse to talk about expenses when I am the one who doesn't work currently and he does?
another question for Jean Chatzky: a lot of State 529 Plans are closing their enrollment periods very soon (in my state, FLorida it is Jan.31, 2010 for this year) and I am wondering, is it a great gift idea for someone else's kid to contribute or is it better to give the parents cash? Particularly kids that are over 15 and already in high school? I was made aware there were a lot of changes made to the plan in my state and the monies covers less starting this fall's incoming students than parents were told it would.
I also wonder if one has saved and then a big ticket item comes up say "Black Friday at a store like KMart, or Big Lots or Burlington Coat Factory, and one has the option of a) using all of ones savings on that 1 item or b) using layaway and getting that item c) not getting it and paying 2 to 5x or more what it's worth when it goes back to regular price? Is Layaway the best option for shopping and spending then or is it better to do without?
I also wonder about sites like elayaway.com are an okay idea for someone making a large gift purchase for someone as long as they know they can pay it back promptly?
How do you have the "talk" with your children (my are step- ages 9, and bio-son ages 5 months so I do not have this problem) about the spending budget on gifts in general? Is it okay to let younger children use their own monies (that they may have received as gifts or earned from allowances) or is it better for the parents to always encourage finding the perfect gift on sale or clearance regardless of the occasion? Help!

What is the "recourse" for a spouse who doesn't track or care what he spends in a given month. It isn't to the point of causing financial difficulties at this point, but once two incomes become one, different story. It's also so frustrating to see money frittered away, especially when greater than what was initially agreed to. I totally get that a certain amount of money is "mad money" to be spent in a way that not everyone will agree to, but ... what about what that limited amount becomes unlimited?

How do you tactfully limit who you give gifts to, especially amongst a social group where there is always someone who starts the gift exchanging? Simply ignoring it is ... a challenge.

Does it help to start shopping early in the year and buy things on sale and for people when you find them vs waiting until the end of the year, or do needs/interests/etc change and who you buy for change so much that the items purchased early are "wasted" often enough that the potential savings are negated?

I make a lot of my gifts for the holidays. How can I present (no pun intended) them so they don't look cheap? I make homemade washable wool socks that don't cost too much; but, I spend about 18-24 hours on each pair.
We have done most of the frugal ideas for the grandparents- photo gifts, family picture, meal coupons, plants andt trees, charitable donation, gift cards, activity and chore coupons, family trip, food of the month, etrc. What are some good ideas for grandparents who have everythihng?
With all of the tax break incentives, should we invest with energy appliances with the holidays quickly approaching?
I am a single mom of four just coming out of a divorce. My ex has not paid any of the bills he was supposed to according to the divorce agreement. Those companies are now coming after me. They say the divorce is civil law and that I am still resposible for those bills. I have been advised by an atty to claim bankrupcy but am hesitant. I don't ever think my ex will pay up (as he is already having his wages garnished for back child support) so what should I do?
I make a good salary as a nurse but child care is taking up close to a third of my income. Do you have any suggestions in how to skimp on cost but not quality of their care?
One last question...despite having an 'almost' negative balance at the end of each month I do want to save for my children's education. What can you suggest for someone like me who really has little to spare after the cost of everyday life?
Thanks so much!
Congrats Lorrie! You are the winner. Please email me your address at jenrik06@yahoo.com

Sheila, I apologize for taking so long to respond to your question but, I've been looking for a fabulous suggestion. I think I found it. Here's a great little bag you can sew to add a very personal touch to the socks you make. You can customize it to the size you need. http://fireflyhilldesigns.blogspot.com/2009/06/re-usable-gift-bags.html
If you aren't very good on the sewing machine you can always get some small plain boxes at the craft store or even the dollar store then decoupage decorative paper or gift wrap to it for a versatile look. I hope this helps with your question and good luck with your holiday gifts!
